We all know that nurses are integral to the success of the cervical screening program in Australia, but who are these nurses and what do they do?

Nurses can be the first contact for many women taking part in cervical screening examination, they can empower and educate women in the benefits of HPV vaccination and cervical screening, they can reassure the nervous, the underscreened or the fully informed. When trained to do so nurses can undertake cervical sampling, and assist with results and recall processing at each step along the pathway a friendly nurse can be an essential tool for GPs and consumers alike.

Kirsty has been working as a registered nurse at Family Planning NSW for over 8 years and has many years’ experience in gynaecology and reproductive and sexual health nursing. She is the State Nurse Coordinator, working as part of the Clinical Services Management team that is responsible for maintaining high level clinical governance across Clinical Services. Kirsty is responsible for maintaining and reviewing nursing scope of practice throughout Family Planning NSW and building clinical networks with external nursing leaders. Kirsty also maintains a clinical load through Penrith clinic providing R&SH consultations to clients including LARC insertion. She is a clinical instructor and works with our Education team to present at clinical forums and family planning courses.
