Screening in Special circumstances and the women with abnormal bleeding (3546)
The renewed cervical screening program provides an opportunity to address the specific screening needs of women in special circumstances. This practical and interactive case-based presentation is based on the updated evidence-based guidance for specific population groups which will take effect from May 2017. It includes an overview of a best-practice approach for women who present for screening after hysterectomy, during pregnancy, after childhood sexual abuse or early sexual activity as well as screening for women who are immune deficient or have been exposed to diethylstilboestrol (DES) in utero.
We will also review the new management guidelines for women presenting with abnormal vaginal bleeding, including post-coital, intermenstrual or post-menopausal bleeding, who require diagnostic assessment and investigations to determine its cause. From May 2017 investigation of symptomatic women of any age will include a HPV DNA and liquid based cytology co-test. In addition to management, raising awareness about when to seek medical advice for abnormal bleeding is also an important role of the primary care practitioner and this presentation will help support the provision of information to women in this important area of clinical practice.
